A soldier deployed to Operation Udoka has been killed in Anambra State under disturbing circumstances. He was reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday, May 18, 2025.

The soldier, who was stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Uli, reportedly left his duty post without permission. He went to a party tagged ‘Ladies’ Jamboree’, which was held at a nearby hotel. Sources say it was a strippers’ event.

The soldier was wearing his military camouflage uniform when he left the base.

A security source revealed that his absence was first noticed during a tactical military operation. “It was during a tactical operation that it was discovered the soldier was missing,” the source said.

“He was later found to have sneaked out of the base without permission to attend a strippers’ party at a nearby hotel, in uniform. It was there that he was accosted and fatally shot.”

Troops later recovered his body at the crime scene. Shockingly, the corpse of a baby was also found at the same location.

The soldier’s service weapon was recovered and is now in military custody. Authorities have not confirmed how the baby was involved or what led to its death.

Security Forces Continue to Face Threats in South-East Nigeria

This tragic incident is the latest in a growing pattern of violent attacks against security forces in Nigeria’s South-East. Attacks have been linked to an amorphous group often referred to as Unknown Gunmen, carrying out repeated ambushes and killings in the region.

Operation Udoka is a counterinsurgency mission coordinated by the Defence Headquarters. Its aim is to restore peace and security in parts of the South-East and South-South zones.

Efforts to reach the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Markus Kangye, were not successful as of the time of this report.

The identity of the soldier has not been made public. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Investigations are expected to determine the motive behind the attack and how the soldier was tracked.
