Public Alert: Fraudsters Use Fake CBN Contracts to Scam Nigerians

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has cautioned the public against fraudulent messages offering contracts, loans, grants, or financial interventions. The apex bank stated that such claims are false and unauthorized.

In a statement issued Monday, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Sidi Ali Hakama, clarified that the CBN does not award contracts or disburse funds through unsolicited emails, phone calls, text messages, WhatsApp, or social media platforms.

Hakama warned, “The CBN has not authorised, licensed, or appointed any individual, group, or organisation to act on its behalf in offering contracts, financial grants, or intervention funds to the public.”

She reiterated, “The Bank does not support or endorse such fraudulent claims in any form.”

CBN Flags Persistent Scams Despite Earlier Warnings

The CBN stated that fraudsters continue circulating fake offers, falsely linking them to the bank’s operations. Officials note that these scams, often appearing too good to be true, exploit Nigerians desperate for financial support.

Despite a public advisory issued on November 18, 2024, the fraudulent schemes persist. The bank reaffirmed that it neither requests payments for contracts nor engages intermediaries to distribute financial opportunities.

CBN officials warn that victims may unknowingly provide sensitive personal details to scammers, putting themselves at risk of financial loss and identity theft.

Public Urged to Report Suspicious Messages

The CBN advised Nigerians to stay alert and report any suspicious communication to security agencies or the nearest CBN branch.

Hakama assured the public, “The CBN is committed to protecting the financial interests of Nigerians. We are working closely with security agencies to curb these fraudulent activities.”

She encouraged citizens to rely on official CBN communication channels for accurate financial information.
