PDP Names Saraki to Head Reconciliation Committee to Address Party Crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed former Senate President Bukola Saraki to head a seven-member committee. The committee’s goal is to resolve internal conflicts and strengthen the party ahead of key upcoming events.

This decision followed a meeting held in Abuja by the PDP Governors’ Forum and former governors. The forum is an influential group within the party.

Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, spoke on the committee’s task. He said the committee would engage party members, build consensus, and foster unity. This effort comes ahead of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting slated for May 27 and the National Elective Convention for August.

The PDP has faced numerous internal challenges since the 2023 general election. These challenges include defections by governors and legislators to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has damaged the party’s cohesion.

Internal Conflicts and Key Issues Facing PDP

The conflict within the PDP intensified after a political disagreement between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The feud deepened existing tensions, especially over leadership positions in the South-South zone.

Another issue causing division is the unresolved vacancy in the position of National Secretary. This position has remained vacant since December 2024, adding to the internal struggles of the party.

Despite multiple efforts to mend the party’s divisions, including interventions by the National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BoT), and Governors’ Forum, unity remains elusive. These failed attempts have caused further fragmentation, particularly at the state and zonal levels.

In one of the most significant developments, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, along with former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other senior PDP members, formally defected to the APC on April 23. This defection was a major blow to the PDP’s image and its future prospects in the 2027 elections.

Governor Mohammed said that the meeting of current and former governors was aimed at addressing these deepening issues. He stressed that the forum was working on strategies to reposition the party and regain its former strength.
