The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed on Wednesday, May 07, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The prosecution presented key evidence linking him to alleged terrorism-related activities.

Led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adegboyega Awomolo, the prosecution introduced several exhibits, including a petition from former Attorney General Abubakar Malami.

The petition accused Kanu of terrorism, murder, and inciting violence against Nigerian security forces. It was submitted to the Department of State Services (DSS) and admitted as Exhibit PWF.

According to the prosecution’s witness, codenamed BBB, Kanu allegedly urged attacks on security personnel in several broadcasts.

“He instructed, through his broadcast, that police and army seen, should be brought down and their guns seized and used.”

The prosecution also submitted a flash drive containing Kanu’s broadcasts. Despite objections from his legal team, the court accepted it as evidence.

Video and Audio Evidence Played in Court

Several recordings were played in court, allegedly featuring Kanu making incendiary remarks. In one clip, he spoke about forming the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and resisting what he called “Fulani domination.”

Another recording reportedly featured Kanu threatening Southeast business owners:

“Nobody is allowed to come out no matter who you are. If you dare open your shop tomorrow we’ll burn you inside that shop.”

Yet in another audio recording, a voice allegedly belonging to Kanu was addressing people who called into his program thus: “any police officer you kill, go to their station and set it on fire. Kill them. They are janjaweeds”.

The voice also said, “Tinubu is in trouble, he cannot run. Anywhere he runs to in this world we will find him. If we don’t behave like mad people in this zoological republic, this revolution will not work”.

Start killing soldiers now, set ambush for them, dig holes on the roads so that when their vehicle comes it will somersault and they will die”.

This particular audio recording was made during the End SARS protest of October 2020 because the voice could be heard taking calls from people across Nigeria who give him update of what’s happening where they are.

The DSS witness testified that Kanu acknowledged making the recordings when they were played during his interrogation.

More Evidence Submitted by Prosecutors

The prosecution also presented a Federal Government gazette from September 20, 2017, which officially designated IPOB as a terrorist organization.

A CD of Kanu’s DSS interrogation was admitted, despite objections from his defense team. His written statement, declining to make further submissions, was also entered as evidence.

The court has adjourned proceedings until Thursday, May 8, 2025, for continued hearings.
