Just weeks after the United States and Ukraine signed a historic minerals deal, Ukraine has reportedly been able to down a daredevil Russian fighter.
Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR) claimed the feat, saying it used a naval drone to destroy the Russian fighter jet over the Black Sea.
The incident happened as far back as Saturday, May 3, when Ukraine’s special operations unit Group 13 shot down the Russian Sukhoi Su-30 near Novorossiysk, a key Russian port.
The GUR announced the strike on social media, calling it the first time a naval drone has successfully targeted an airborne combat aircraft.
It is not known if the drone is a domestically manufactured one with such excellent strike precision or may have been gifted by its Western backers.
A Game-Changer in Warfare
The operation used a Magura naval drone equipped with a missile warhead.
“On May 2, GUR’s Group 13 made history—for the first time ever, a fighter jet was destroyed by a naval drone,” the agency stated.
The Su-30, valued at $50 million, exploded mid-air before crashing into the sea.
Ukraine has previously used drones to strike Russian naval assets, but this marks a new level of capability.
Russia Keeps Sealed Lips
The Russian defense ministry has not confirmed the incident.
Ukraine’s intelligence agency released footage of the strike, but independent verification is still pending.
