The House of Representatives descended into heated debate on Tuesday as lawmakers from insurgency-hit regions accused the Federal Government of failing to address Nigeria’s deteriorating security crisis.
Fresh attacks by Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe states fueled the lawmakers’ frustrations, as they warned that inaction could push Nigerians to turn against their elected leaders.
Lawmakers Raise Alarm Over Escalating Violence
The debate began with a motion of urgent public importance raised by Rep Ahmed Satomi, addressing a recent fire at Giwa Barracks’ armory and increasing assaults on military formations.
Hon. Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau) didn’t mince words, blasting those who downplay the crisis.
“When a governor is crying, and someone says he’s raising an unnecessary alarm—we are rascals. Nigerians are being killed. This is unacceptable,” Gagdi declared.
Hon. Ahmed Jaha (APC, Borno), representing Chibok, delivered a chilling account.
“Ten peasant farmers were slaughtered in Pulka, 14 in Chibok, and military officers in Izge and Kampu,” he revealed.
Jaha also warned that insurgents are becoming more sophisticated.
“In Wajiboko, Boko Haram used weaponized drones. The Nigerian Army is outgunned and undermanned. I have seen it. Nobody told me. I was there.”
Lawmakers Demand More Military Action
Jaha pressed the government on military spending, noting that Nigeria allocated ₦19.7 trillion to security from 2015 to 2019, yet Boko Haram remains a growing threat.
“Boko Haram is coming back worse than before. We must take oversight seriously to prevent another occupation of local governments,” he stressed.
As tensions flared, lawmakers vowed to pressure the government for more decisive action.
