In the biggest sign that the crisis in the Labour Party (LP) is not ending soon, the faction loyal to embattled chairman Julius Abure has formed a disciplinary committee to investigate Abia State Governor Alex Otti and other members accused of anti-party activities.
The decision was announced after an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Friday. The faction also declared that it was not involved in any coalition discussions with other political parties.
NEC Meeting Decisions
Reading the official communique, signed by Abure and Farouk Umar, Abure stated, “NEC reviewed the anti-party activities of Dr. Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor, and other erring members. Consequently, a disciplinary committee has been set up.”
The committee, chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, includes Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim as Secretary, alongside members Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Callistus Ihejiagwa. They have two weeks to submit their findings.
Abure criticized those involved in coalition talks, questioning their ability to maintain unity within their parties. “Most of them struggle to keep their own parties together. How can they sustain unity in this so-called coalition?”
Validating the 2024 National Convention
The NEC reaffirmed the legitimacy of the 2024 National Convention, stating it followed all constitutional and electoral guidelines.
“NEC confirmed that the 2024 National Convention was conducted in line with the 1999 Constitution, Electoral Act 2022, the Labour Party Constitution, INEC regulations, and party guidelines,” the communique read.
The committee also expressed confidence in the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) led by Julius Abure.
“We support the NWC elected at the 2024 National Convention and trust their ability to guide the party towards unity, progress, and victory in upcoming elections,” NEC stated.
Additionally, NEC praised Nigeria’s Supreme Court for upholding the authority of political parties and the binding nature of decisions made by legitimate party bodies.
Call for Unity and Election Preparations
NEC reiterated its commitment to reconciliation within the party and urged aggrieved members to embrace peace.
“We extend an olive branch to all members. Let’s set aside differences for the progress of the party and the nation,” the statement added.
The faction congratulated Chief George Muoghalu for winning the LP ticket in the 2025 Anambra Governorship primaries held in Awka.
“We call on all party members and Ndi Anambra to support Chief George Muoghalu in the November 8, 2025 election for a greater Anambra State,” NEC declared.
