2027: NLC Says Obi Doesn’t Need Political Alliances to Win

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says Peter Obi doesn’t need any alliance with Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai or the PDP to win in 2027.

In a chat with reporters, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, made this very clear.

“Peter Obi doesn’t need any coalition to win the 2027 presidential election,” he said. “He is a sellable candidate.”

Ndubuaku said Obi already had strong support in 2023 and was close to winning before the elections ran into problems.

“He even defeated Tinubu in his own stronghold in Lagos, which shows Nigerians want him in power,” he added.

He also believes Obi can beat President Bola Tinubu in a free and fair contest.

“For as long as INEC conducts a free and fair election, he will win,” he said. “He can also leverage his local and international connections to make it happen.”

NLC Warns Obi Against PDP Return

Ndubuaku also dismissed talks of Obi going back to the PDP. He said the PDP is no longer a strong party.

“No serious candidate will consider the PDP as a viable platform at this point,” he said.

He explained that Obi would be making a mistake if he ever considered leaving the Labour Party.

“Obi is a disciplined man. If people are suggesting he return to the PDP, on what basis?” Ndubuaku asked.

He compared the Labour Party’s issues with those of the PDP.

“While LP’s crisis—centering around Julius Abure—has been settled by the Supreme Court, the PDP is still battling a hydra-headed crisis,” he said. “Moving from LP to PDP would be like jumping from frying pan to fire.”

His comments came shortly after the Obidients Movement promised full support for Obi in 2027, no matter the party platform.

Dr. Yunusa Tanko, who leads the movement, said Nigeria is in a very bad shape and needs urgent help.

“Obi remains the only candidate capable of leading the country out of its current economic crisis,” Tanko said.

Ndubuaku agreed, saying Obi has support from people across all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Zoning Fears and Obi’s Ambition

Ndubuaku also spoke about fears from some parts of the North over zoning and power rotation.

“The only reservation some people have is that if Obi wins, he could take the full eight years, which the North fears may disrupt the zoning balance,” he explained.

But he insisted Obi isn’t hungry for power and won’t need a full eight years to fix Nigeria.

“We know Obi doesn’t need eight years to revive Nigeria. He’s not desperate for power,” he said.
