Tragedy hit the Abakpa area of Kaduna State on Tuesday when an explosion killed two children and injured three other residents.
The victims were identified as 13-year-old Imam and six-year-old Nasrin. Both lost their lives after a loud blast rocked their neighborhood. The explosion happened not far from the old site of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), causing panic among residents.
Imam died while being rushed to the hospital by a neighbor who heard the explosion and ran outside.
A resident told pressmen, “The explosion occurred very close to my house. So when I heard it, I ran out to see what has happened. I saw one of the affected victims, Imam, and tried to take him to the hospital but he died before we got to the hospital.”
The community is still trying to understand what happened. The cause of the explosion hasn’t been confirmed yet. Security officials are currently investigating.
The blast has raised many questions. Was it a leftover bomb? A homemade device? Or just an accidental gas explosion? Nobody knows yet.
Some reports say the explosion may have come from a scrap item that children were playing with. This wouldn’t be the first time something like this happened in northern Nigeria. There have been past incidents involving children picking up unknown metallic objects, only for them to explode.
The three people who were injured are receiving medical treatment. Their condition was not disclosed.
