The legal adviser to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has asked President Bola Tinubu to urgently address rising violence linked to herders across Nigeria.
Ejiofor said the attacks were becoming a pattern in many rural areas and called for coordinated action by federal and state governments.
He made the call in a press statement from Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Monday. He reacted to reports of violent attacks on farming villages in multiple states.
“Nigeria is experiencing a troubling wave of violence affecting several regions, including Plateau, Benue, parts of Enugu, and Delta States,” he said.
According to Ejiofor, the killings are no longer shocking to many Nigerians because of how frequently they happen.
“The human toll continues to rise, and the impact on affected communities is devastating,” he added.
Lives Lost, Families Broken
Ejiofor said many people now treat the deaths as numbers. But behind every number, he said, are real people who mattered.
“Behind those numbers are mothers, fathers, children, and breadwinners — citizens whose lives have been tragically cut short,” he noted.
He accused the government of doing very little beyond issuing public statements. “The time for rhetoric has passed,” he said.
Ejiofor insisted it was time for real action, warning that further delays would worsen the crisis.
“There must be coordinated action to fulfill the constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property,” he stated.
The lawyer said farming communities are now vulnerable and living in fear. Many of them have abandoned their land, homes, and businesses.
The conflict over land use between farmers and herders has lasted for years in Nigeria. It often involves violent clashes and loss of life.
Call for Community Vigilance
Ejiofor encouraged people in local communities to be watchful and protect themselves lawfully. He also urged security agencies to act fairly and fast.
“Communities must remain vigilant and engage in lawful self-protection measures,” he said.
He also urged security forces to be neutral and professional in their response.
“Security agencies must respond promptly and impartially to all reported incidents,” he concluded.
The herders invasion, banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, insurgency have defied four Nigerian governments since 2009.
