Suspected members of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) bombed a major bridge in Yobe State on Thursday night.

The destroyed bridge connected Ngurbuwa to Goniri in Gujba Local Government Area. Residents said the attack happened around 10:30 pm.

Sources confirmed to counter-terrorism reporter Zagazola Makama that the attackers used explosives to destroy what was left of the old bridge.

The blast has now cut off movement between the two communities, affecting daily life and business.

A local vigilante officer in Gujba said the bombing happened “shortly after the terrorists entered Goniri village.”

He spoke on the condition of anonymity for his safety.

A traditional head in the area, who also asked not to be named, confirmed the destruction. “This bridge is the oldest link between Ngurbuwa and Goniri. We’re now suffering,” he said.

Farmers, Traders Hit Hard

The bridge was a lifeline for farmers, traders, and transporters. Now, people must walk long distances or risk unsafe paths to reach their destinations.

Some residents are appealing for help. “We are begging the Yobe State Government to protect the remaining bridges in this area,” one local told reporters.

Mallam Aliyu, a resident of Ngurbuwa, called on the President. “President Bola Tinubu must act now. We need more soldiers in Gujba,” he said.

He believes this will help reduce the attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP in the region.

Aliyu said life has become dangerous. “People in Gujba, Buni Yadi, Goniri, and Katarko can’t sleep with their eyes closed anymore,” he said.

“Farmers and traders are leaving their work during the day because of fear.”

Many in the area now live in fear and uncertainty as security worsens.

They also fear the terrorists could target more infrastructure or communities soon.

Resurgent ISWAP and Boko Haram in Yobe

ISWAP, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, has been responsible for several deadly attacks in the North-East.

The group is known for targeting military posts, villages, and public infrastructure. They aim to control territories and undermine local governments.

Gujba and its neighboring communities have long suffered from frequent attacks.

Since 2009, Boko Haram’s insurgency has led to the deaths of over 35,000 people in Nigeria and displaced more than 2 million.

Yobe, alongside Borno and Adamawa, is one of the worst-hit states.

People living in these areas continue to call for better protection and quick rebuilding of damaged facilities.
