A wave of coordinated terror attacks has shattered the relative peace of northeastern Nigeria after multiple explosions ripped through the Borno State capital.

Three suspected suicide bombings killed at least 23 citizens and wounded 108 others in Maiduguri during a series of near-simultaneous evening blasts.

The deadly incidents occurred at crowded public locations, including the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the popular Monday Market.

Borno police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed that emergency teams quickly evacuated survivors who sustained varying degrees of severe injuries.

President Bola Tinubu quickly condemned the violence before departing for a scheduled two-day official diplomatic state visit to the United Kingdom.

“The Monday attacks were desperate acts of the evil-minded terrorist groups,” Tinubu stated in an official press release to the public.

“Our gallant military and civilian task forces will curtail and put them down.”

No insurgent faction has officially accepted responsibility, but suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram fighters who launched a regional insurgency in 2009.

Over the years, the extremist network grew stronger and split into competing factions like the Islamic State West Africa Province, backed by global networks.

Terror Blasts Strike Crowded Commercial Hubs

The first detonation shook the teaching hospital gates around 7:30 p.m. while subsequent blasts hit the post office business hub and Monday Market.

Witnesses described scenes of absolute horror as security operatives struggled to cordon off the locations amid thick smoke and mounting civilian casualties.

Hospital survivor Caleb Jonah explained that he was approaching the medical center when he noticed a strange physical altercation occurring near the gates.

“I was coming to the hospital to check (in on) a patient when I saw two men struggling with the security men at the gate,” Jonah recounted.

“Before I could process what was going on I heard the deafening blast and I passed out.”

Another local resident, Mamman Usman, aged 52, shared that his younger brother was closing his commercial stall when the market bomb detonated.

“He was badly injured and rushed to the hospital unconscious,” Usman added while waiting for medical updates at the crowded emergency ward.

Volunteer responder Mohammed Hassan stated that local blood banks require immediate donations from the public to treat the massive influx of patients.

Furthermore, the federal administration previously allocated over ₦500,000,000 to boost emergency healthcare infrastructure across the North East.

The attacks occurred less than 24 hours after military units successfully repelled a separate insurgent raid on the outskirts of the state capital.

Security researcher Malik Samuel from Good Governance Africa explained that the location holds immense strategic value for the military.

“Maiduguri being attacked is like an insult for the security forces … and for the (jihadi) groups, it is symbolic because it shows nowhere is out of their reach,” Samuel stated.

Mass Abductions Hit Borno Primary School

Meanwhile, a separate security crisis emerged in Southern Borno where suspected insurgents invaded Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira-Uba.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, confirmed that heavily armed Boko Haram fighters abducted 42 pupils during their early morning lessons.

An anonymous local resident expressed deep fears to reporters regarding the ultimate fate of the stolen children if rescue operations fail.

“As at the last count, 20 children are said to be abducted from the school. Our fear is that the terrorists would conscript them if the security operatives did not rescue them,” the resident alleged.

The Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Askira, confirmed the tragic operational breach but stated details were initially fluid.

“Details of the attack are sketchy, but the information at my disposal was that many of the students fled into the bush, but I don’t have details of those abducted yet,” Askira) explained.

Furthermore, Senator Ndume provided a specific breakdown compiled by school administrators to help the Armed Forces of Nigeria track the victims.

“Information at my disposal from the schools’ authorities indicated that 28 pupils were abducted from the primary section, 4 students from the GDSS (2 male and 2 female),

while 10 children were abducted from their various residential houses, making a total of 42 persons,” Ndume stated.

The Borno State police command assured the public that investigations are ongoing to secure the region and bring all perpetrators to justice.
