Air Peace Suspends Flights To Enugu Over Runway Safety

Air Peace has suspended all flights to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu due to safety concerns.

The airline made the announcement on Friday through its Head of Corporate Communications, Ejike Ndiulo.

In a statement, Ndiulo said the runway at the Enugu airport was no longer safe for flights.

“We regret to inform you that all flights scheduled to Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu are temporarily suspended due to safety concerns of the Enugu airport runway.”

According to him, the condition of the runway has already caused serious flight disruptions.

“The situation of the Enugu runway has been causing major disruptions to Air Peace flights,” he said.

The airline said the move is temporary and was made with passengers’ safety in mind.

“At Air Peace, we prioritize safety first over convenience,” Ndiulo added.

Flights Rerouted to Asaba Airport

All Air Peace flights that were meant for Enugu will now take off and land at Asaba Airport instead.

“All flights scheduled into and out of Enugu will now be operated into and out of Asaba airport,” the airline said.

The airline said this change would give the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) time to fix the runway.

“We believe that if flights are not operated into this aerodrome for the next few days, it will allow FAAN the opportunity to perform the necessary repairs,” Ndiulo noted.

Passengers affected by the change are advised to check updated schedules and make new travel plans.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is yet to issue an official statement in response to Air Peace’s action.

Enugu airport has previously been shut down for runway repairs. In 2019, the airport was closed for several months due to safety issues, before reopening in 2020 after upgrades.

That earlier closure also affected many travelers and businesses in the Southeast.

Passengers and travel agents in Enugu have reacted with concern. Many say this suspension could affect Easter travel plans.

Air Peace is Nigeria’s largest airline and operates multiple domestic and international routes.

It was the only major airline currently flying into Enugu from Lagos and Abuja daily.

For now, travelers will have to use alternative airports in Asaba or Owerri until Enugu runway issues are fixed.
