Brigadier-General Chima Ekeator has complained about low number of applicants from the South-East in the ongoing Nigerian Army recruitment exercise.

At a sensitisation meeting with youth leaders and President-Generals of various communities in Anambra State, Ekeator revealed that only 200 youths from the entire South-East had registered. Meanwhile, over 4,000 applicants have signed up from other regions.

“This sensitisation is essential because, according to records, only 200 persons have registered from the South-East, while in other regions, no fewer than 4,000 individuals have applied,” he said.

Ekeator asked youth leaders and community heads to mobilise more young people to take advantage of the opportunity. He stressed that increasing South-East representation in the Nigerian Army is important for the region.

Representing the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Commissioner for Youth Development Patrick Aghamba reaffirmed the government’s support for the recruitment. He urged traditional rulers and community leaders to mobilise at least 10 youths per community.

Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, encouraged eligible youths between 18 and 22 years to seize the chance and enlist.

The region is reputed for its preferred entrepreneurial and industrial inclinations, although other political considerations may have helped to dampened the enthusiasm of their youths in embracing the national military service.
