American Football Launch First African Flag Football Championship Ahead of Los Angeles Olympics

The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) has announced the inaugural African Flag Football Championships, scheduled for June 20-21, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt.

The championship is intended to globalize the game ahead of its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. It will serve as a qualification pathway for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

NFL Africa Lead Osi Umenyiora highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “Including Africa in global sporting development is crucial for the sport’s growth and inclusivity.”

The event will feature 12 teams—six men’s and six women’s—competing for spots in the World Championships.

The NFL will also host youth development events alongside the championships, fostering grassroots participation.

This expansion reflects IFAF and the NFL’s commitment to establishing a long-term Olympic presence and promoting flag football’s accessibility across continents.
