A group of women in Rivers State staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday in Port Harcourt, expressing support for the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu.

The march quickly followed a previous protest on Friday by women loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who opposed the emergency declaration made on March 18, 2025.

Tinubu’s directive led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, and the Rivers State House of Assembly. In their place, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.), the former Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed Sole Administrator of the state.

Upon assuming office, Ibas suspended all political appointees and department heads, further reshaping the state’s governance.

The demonstrators, dressed in white attire, carried placards with inscriptions such as “State of Emergency is Constitutional” and “No Tribal War in Rivers State, No More Fubara”.

Former Etche Local Government Area Vice Chairman, Hon. Gladys Nweke, who helped organize the march, spoke to journalists.

“What we are doing here is a solidarity march in support of the state of emergency in Rivers State,” Nweke said.

She credited the emergency measures with reducing violence and cult-related activities.

“Since the declaration of a state of emergency, there has been peace. We no longer hear about killings and cult activities in the state,” she added.
