The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has renewed its call for the unconditional release of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since 2021. The group claims that many of Kanu’s past warnings about Nigeria’s security and political situation have come true.
In a statement released by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group said Kanu foresaw many of Nigeria’s current challenges.
“The recent events in Nigeria reflect what Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had long warned about. His concerns about insecurity, national disunity, and the marginalization of various ethnic groups have continued to unfold,” the statement read.
Kanu, arrested and extradited in 2021, remains in detention on charges linked to his advocacy for Biafran self-determination. IPOB argues that his predictions about rising insecurity and political instability should prompt a national debate on Nigeria’s future.
The group referenced Kanu’s broadcasts dating back to 2014, in which he allegedly warned of worsening security conditions and increasing activity by armed groups in different regions.
A Call for Restructuring
IPOB reiterated its belief that Nigeria’s political structure needs urgent revision, arguing that the forced amalgamation of ethnic groups has contributed to ongoing conflicts.
“We believe the lasting solution lies in giving ethnic nationalities the opportunity to decide their own paths. This must be achieved through peaceful means and mutual respect,” the statement added.
The group urged the federal government to consider a referendum that would allow different ethnic groups to determine their political and cultural futures, following examples set by other nations.
Additionally, IPOB called for Kanu’s immediate release, stating that his continued detention was unjust. It appealed to national stakeholders to support discussions on Nigeria’s restructuring based on principles of equity and justice.
IPOB’s Commitment to Non-Violence
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful advocacy and insisted it does not support violence.
“We remain committed to non-violence and the protection of our people,” the statement said.
The group also urged Nigerians to unite and address the country’s security concerns constructively. It also emphasized the importance of collective solutions for a stable future.
