China has raised tariffs on U.S. imports from 34% to 84%, starting Thursday, in response to recent U.S. tariff hikes on Chinese goods.
The Chinese Finance Ministry announced the new tariff rate in a statement on Wednesday. It will take effect at 12:01 a.m. CST on April 10.
“On April 8, 2025, the U.S. government increased the ‘reciprocal tariff’ on Chinese goods exported to the U.S. from 34% to 84%,” the statement said.
China has called the U.S. tariff hikes “a mistake on top of a mistake“, adding that they “seriously infringe on China’s legitimate rights and interests and damage the rules-based multilateral trading system.”
In response, China is raising tariffs on imports from the United States to the same level—84%.
Growing Tensions Between China and the U.S.
This trade escalation follows China’s earlier warning that it would “fight to the end” against U.S. tariffs. The Chinese government maintains that trade between the two countries is balanced, despite the 104% tax imposed on its exports to the U.S.
While some countries have started negotiating with the White House, China has not stated whether it plans to engage in direct talks over the dispute.
