Burkina Faso’s Traoré Rejects Democracy, Calls for a “Popular, Progressive Revolution”

Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has declared that his country is not operating under a democracy, but rather undergoing a “popular, progressive revolution.”

Speaking at a flag-raising ceremony at Koulouba Palace, Traoré argued that democracy has never been the driving force behind national development.

Democracy vs. Revolution

Traoré made bold claims about governance models, stating, “If we have to say it loud and clear here, we are not in a democracy, we are in a popular, progressive revolution.”

He insisted that every developed country has undergone a revolution before achieving progress, rejecting the notion that democracy is a prerequisite for national advancement. “It is impossible to name a country that has developed in democracy. Democracy is only the result,” he stated.

Traoré emphasized his government’s dedication to explaining and communicating the principles of revolution, ensuring citizens understand the transition Burkina Faso is undergoing.

Controversial Decisions and Global Attention

Since taking power through a September 2022 coup, the 37-year-old leader has made notable policy decisions that have drawn international attention.

Recently, he declined Saudi Arabia’s offer to build 200 mosques in Burkina Faso, urging the Islamic nation to invest in infrastructure projects that directly benefit the population instead.

The President continues to push for a self-reliant, independent Burkina Faso, rejecting external influences that do not align with his vision for national progress.
