President Tinubu’s Political Adviser From the North, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Resigns Abruptly

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has resigned as the political adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His resignation came about two weeks ago, though the news is only now making rounds.

Baba-Ahmed, who was the former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), did not give specific reasons for stepping down. Presidential sources say he cited personal reasons in his resignation letter but did not elaborate further.

He was appointed as Special Adviser on Political Matters in the office of Vice President Kashim Shettima in September 2023. Since then, he has been a visible figure, representing the presidency at several national discussions and policy events.

“I have left government in the manner I joined: with gratitude to those who gave me the opportunity and trust,” Baba-Ahmed shared in a post confirming his departure.

“I am grateful to many who supported me in and outside government. Public service should be exactly that: service.”

Hakeem’s Roles in Government

Over the past 17 months, Baba-Ahmed played an active role in shaping policy discussions and representing the government’s political interests. He was recently a key speaker at the National Conference on “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathway to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” which took place in Abuja from January 28 to 29, 2025.

Before joining the government, Baba-Ahmed was known for his outspoken views on national issues. As a former NEF spokesperson, he frequently discussed governance challenges and the state of Nigeria’s democracy.

His resignation has led to speculation about internal disagreements within the administration. However, no official statement has been made regarding a replacement.

Baba-Ahmed’s resignation is reminiscent of the sudden departure of another adviser to the president, this time from the South South region. Ajuri Ngelale, the former spokesman for the president resigned on September 7, 2024, citing medical issues at home.
