A U.S. federal judge has permanently dismissed the criminal case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. This comes just weeks after the Trump administration ordered prosecutors to withdraw the charges.
The court’s ruling means Adams can no longer face these charges based on the same evidence. The decision follows growing fear that there are political interferences in legal proceedings in the United States of America.
Case Dismissed With Prejudice
Federal prosecutors had accused Adams of conspiracy, fraud, bribery, and illegally accepting over $100,000 in gifts from Turkish nationals. The indictment, filed in September, claimed these contributions influenced political favors in New York City.
Throughout the case, Adams denied any wrongdoing. “This case was based on falsehoods and political games. I have always maintained my innocence,” he stated after the ruling.
Judge Dale Ho dismissed the case with prejudice, blocking the Department of Justice from refiling the charges.
In his ruling, he cited concerns that continuing the case could create the perception that Adams’ legal fate depended on his cooperation with federal immigration policies.
Political Implications and Resignation Fallout
The case took a political turn when the Trump administration intervened. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove ordered prosecutors to drop the case, arguing that Adams needed to focus on addressing illegal immigration and violent crime—two major policy priorities for Trump’s administration.
This decision led to the resignation of Danielle Sassoon, Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor.
In her resignation letter, Sassoon accused the administration of political interference, calling the dismissal a “clear case of quid pro quo”.
Following the ruling, Adams’ lawyer, Alex Spiro, said, “This case should never have been brought in the first place. Today, justice prevailed for Mayor Adams and all New Yorkers.”
With the case closed, Adams is expected to return his full attention to governing the city, focusing on crime reduction, housing issues, and infrastructure improvements.
