Spanish La Liga: Robert Lewandowski’s Double Fires Barcelona to Victory Over Girona

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Barcelona cruised to a 4-1 victory over Girona on Sunday, moving three points clear at the top of the Spanish La Liga. The win came after Real Madrid had temporarily drawn level on points the day before by defeating Leganes.

The match at the Olympic Stadium saw Barcelona extend their unbeaten run in 2023 to 20 games. Despite Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe scoring a brace on Saturday, Lewandowski’s double ensured he stayed three goals ahead in the race for Spain’s Golden Boot.

Lineups

Barcelona started with Marc-André ter Stegen in goal, Jules Koundé, Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araújo, and Alejandro Balde in defense, Frenkie de Jong, Ilkay Gündogan, and Pedri in midfield, and Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Ferran Torres leading the attack.

Girona fielded Paulo Gazzaniga in goal, Miguel Gutiérrez, David López, Daley Blind, and Yan Couto in defense, Aleix García, Iván Martín, and Viktor Tsygankov in midfield, with Arnaut Danjuma, Cristhian Stuani, and Savio up front.

How the Match Unfolded

Barcelona took the lead in the first half through an own goal by Girona’s Ladislav Krejci. The breakthrough came after teenage sensation Lamine Yamal delivered a dangerous free kick, which Krejci accidentally deflected into his own net.

Girona equalized early in the second half when Arnaut Danjuma finished clinically past Ter Stegen following a well-worked move. However, Barcelona responded swiftly. Lewandowski restored their lead with his 24th goal of the season, flicking the ball past Paulo Gazzaniga after receiving a precise pass from Pedri.

The Polish striker added another goal later in the match, showcasing his predatory instincts inside the box. Ferran Torres wrapped up the win with a late strike, securing Barcelona’s dominant victory. This marked the 20th time this season that Barcelona had scored four or more goals in a game.

Post-Match Analysis

Despite Girona’s strong performance last season, when they defeated Barcelona twice, they struggled to match their rivals this time. Barcelona’s dominance was evident, particularly in the second half, when their relentless attacking play overwhelmed Girona’s defense.

Elsewhere in La Liga, fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Osasuna, allowing Villarreal to close the gap to just six points after their 2-1 win over Getafe.

Real Betis continued their impressive form, winning their sixth consecutive match by beating Sevilla 2-1 in a fiery derby. Meanwhile, Valencia’s 1-0 win over Mallorca lifted them to 15th place, four points clear of the relegation zone.

What the Coaches Said

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández praised his team’s resilience and attacking quality: “We showed our strength today. Even when Girona equalized, we stayed calm and took control of the game.

Girona coach Michel Sánchez admitted his side struggled against Barcelona’s superior quality. “There’s a difference between the teams,” he said. “We tried to hold our own, but they were more clinical in key moments.”

Player of the Match

The 36-year-old striker Robert Lewandowski showed no signs of slowing down, scoring twice and leading the line with confidence, earning him the Player of the Match.

What Next

Barcelona now turns their focus to their next La Liga fixture against Atletico Madrid, a crucial clash in the title race. Girona will look to bounce back in their upcoming match against Real Sociedad.
