The Labour Party (LP) has approved George Muoghalu and John Nwosu to contest its primary election on April 5, ahead of the Anambra State governorship election in November.
The party’s screening committee, led by Deputy Minority Whip of the House of Representatives George Ozodinobi, vetted both aspirants on Friday. The committee described the contenders as dedicated party members with strong track records.
“We will work according to the laid-down rules and ensure a fair selection process,” Ozodinobi said. “Transparency is our priority.”
LP’s Commitment to Unity and Victory
Ozodinobi stressed that the primary election would be conducted peacefully, and all party members would support the eventual winner.
“We will approach the election as a united house, without rancor,” he said. “It will be a brotherly contest, and everyone will back our flag-bearer to win in November.”
Muoghalu previously served as the first National Secretary of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). He was once also the National Auditor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Nwosu, on the other hand, played a key role in the 2023 presidential campaign of Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed.
LP Sees Anambra as a Test for 2027
Meanwhile, LP National Chairman Julius Abure said the party views the Anambra election as a preview of its plans for the 2027 presidential election.
“We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be,” Abure said at a forum in Awka last Saturday. “Labour Party has grown beyond a briefcase party. We are present in all states of Nigeria, and we are preparing not just for Anambra but for 2027.”
Abure, who was represented by the National Women Leader, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, urged all aspirants and party members to remain united.
“After Saturday’s primary, no one is permitted to be angry,” he said. “We must stand strong and united. Nothing will be impossible for us to achieve.”
The forum, organized by the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration (DMI), allowed aspirants to interact with party delegates ahead of the primaries.
Muoghalu and Nwosu both presented their manifestos to party members, outlining their plans for Anambra if elected.
