The boxing community is grieving the loss of Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion.
He died after collapsing during a fight in Ghana on Saturday.
The tragic incident happened at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League, held at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Olanrewaju was up against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu when he suddenly lost consciousness in the ring.
A Shocking Loss for Boxing
Eyewitnesses say Olanrewaju was ahead on points before the unfortunate incident. A viral video on social media shows the moment he collapsed, leaving fans and officials in shock. Medical personnel rushed to assist, but their efforts could not save him.
Olanrewaju was a respected figure in Nigerian boxing. He held both National and West African light-heavyweight titles and was admired for his dedication to the sport. His death has drawn an outpouring of tributes from fellow boxers, sports officials, and fans.
“We have lost a great fighter,” a Nigerian boxing official said. “He was a true champion, and his impact on boxing in Nigeria and West Africa will not be forgotten.”
Many in the boxing world are calling for improved medical protocols at professional fights to prevent similar tragedies.
The Ghana Boxing Authority has yet to release an official statement, but sources say an investigation is underway.
