Davido Opens Up on Marriage With Chioma: “It’s No Joke”

Nigerian music star Davido has opened up about the challenges of transitioning from a long-term relationship to marriage. He spoke about his experiences in a recent interview on the Bootleg Kev podcast.

The Afrobeats singer revealed that he and his wife, Chioma Adeleke, had been together for years before they officially got married. According to him, cohabiting for eight years before marriage made the transition smoother.

Long-Term Relationship Before Marriage

I think I’m one of the lucky ones because me and my partner have been together for a long time prior to getting married. We’ve been living together,” Davido said.

The singer met Chioma while studying at Babcock University. Their relationship became public in 2018 when he dedicated the song Assurance to her. Despite ups and downs, including a temporary split in 2021, they reunited and eventually tied the knot.

Davido reflected on how their early cohabitation helped them understand each other’s lifestyles.

I was in my third year in college when we met. I was lucky enough for us to move in together early, like eight years before we even got married,” he said.

He admitted that marriage came with new responsibilities but credited Chioma for always supporting his career.

Getting married is no joke. The transition from being good friends and living together… And throughout the time we were living together, I was touring and really on the road,” he explained.

She always understood what I did for work, and she knows I’m at my happiest when I work. She knows I love music as she loves being in the kitchen. So the transition to marriage wasn’t too crazy for me.

Overcoming Challenges Together

Their relationship had its difficult moments, including the tragic loss of their first child, Ifeanyi, in October 2022. However, they remained strong together.

In March 2023, Davido confirmed that they had officially married.
