Nigeria’s organised labour has strongly condemned the federal government’s state of emergency rule in Rivers State. Labour leaders warn they could take actions that could potentially disrupt industrial peace if the declaration is not reversed soon.
A statement jointly signed by Alex Agwanwor (NLC Chairman), Sir Comrade Ikechukwu Onyefuru (TUC Chairman), and Comrade Chuku Emecheta (JNC Chairman), the Unions described the action as unconstitutional and harmful to democracy.
They argue that the suspension of the Rivers State Governor, Deputy Governor, and elected state officials violates Nigeria’s democratic principles.
“The people of Rivers State freely elected these officials,” the statement read. “Any attempt to remove them outside constitutional processes is a direct attack on democracy.”
The unions insist that such decisions should be reversed immediately to maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s governance system.
Economic and Social Impact of the State of Emergency
Labour leaders stress that the emergency declaration has worsened economic hardships in the state. Many local government workers have not received their salaries, leaving them in financial distress amid high inflation and rising living costs.
“Withholding workers’ wages during these tough economic times is unacceptable,” they stated. “The cost of living is already unbearable, and this decision adds to the suffering.”
They also warn that the crisis in Rivers State threatens Nigeria’s overall economic stability.
“With inflation rising, the naira struggling, and unemployment growing, further instability in Rivers State will worsen the situation nationwide.“
They further argue that the political uncertainty drives away potential investors, damages the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) and long-term economic prospects.
Labour’s Call for Immediate Action
While recognising the importance of maintaining law and order, the unions insist that the federal government must operate within constitutional boundaries.
“Suspending elected officials and disrupting salary payments violate fundamental rights,” the statement added. “It will only deepen economic and security challenges.”
“We call on the federal government to reverse this decision immediately and reinstate the suspended officials.“
The unions advocate for a peaceful resolution through dialogue with key stakeholders. However, they warn that failure to engage in meaningful discussions could escalate the crisis.
“Workers should remain calm and continue their duties, but if our demands are ignored, we will take strategic union actions,” they declared. “The consequences could significantly impact national economic activities.”
