Music artist Naira Marley testified virtually before a Magistrate Court in Ikorodu on Friday, denying any involvement in the death of fellow singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
Marley claimed Mohbad was signed to his record label, Marlian Records, under a contract to produce four albums, but the albums were never completed due to disagreements between Mohbad and his manager, Opere Babatunde.
Marley denied allegations of threatening or molesting Mohbad, citing a police report that cleared him. He also dismissed accusations of harassment, saying they “existed only in people’s imaginations.”
Asked about a viral video where Mohbad said that Marley and the Marlian crew should be held responsible if anything happened to him, Marley replied that Mohbad and his parents later apologized, attributing the video to Mohbad being under the influence of drugs.
Disputes and Royalties
However, Mohbad’s lawyer, Oluwasanmi Falade, challenged Marley’s claims, stating there was a dispute between Mohbad and Marlian Records over unpaid royalties. Falade revealed that he wrote several letters to Marlian Records regarding royalty payments, but received no response. The dispute has escalated into a legal matter before the Federal High Court.
Falade also recounted an attack on Mohbad at Lekki Beach, allegedly orchestrated by music promoter Sam Larry. Despite two failed attempts, police at Force Headquarters tried to arrest Sam Larry.
Following the testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi summoned Sam Larry to testify at the next hearing on April 11. The Coroner also ordered witness summons for Mohbad’s driver and instructed the pathologist to submit findings to the court and the Chief Coroner.
