Nigerian security forces comprising of soldiers and policement have reportedly clashed with several protesters in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzu Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Tuesday.

The protesters, mostly women, were demonstrating against the incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen in the area.

According to sources quoted by an online publication, the trouble started when the women apprehended two individuals accused of masterminding herdsmen attacks in Eha-Amufu. While one of them escaped, the women held the other suspect and paraded him through the communities.

Security Forces Intervene

The Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, deployed soldiers, anti-riot police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel to intervene. However, the security forces ended up clashing with the protesters.

Mrs. Regina Odoh, one of the leading protesters, recounted the events: “On getting to Eke, the central market, hundreds of soldiers and policemen blocked us. We pleaded with the security agents to leave our way since they could not protect them.

The women accused the security forces of aiding the atrocities of Fulani herdsmen on their people. “If the government and security agencies cannot protect us, they shouldn’t suppress our outcry,” Mrs. Odoh added.

In the chaos, the security team shot four women and wounded several others, who have been taken to the hospital. The protesters responded by pelting the security forces with stones and sticks.

There has been several reported cases of attacks by herdsmen in the lush farmlands of several communities in Enugu and Ebonyi States.

The women protesters have vowed to continue their demonstration until the government takes concrete steps to address the insecurity in the region.
