Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports that he plans to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a statement on Saturday, his media team blamed political opponents for spreading the false claim.
“We have observed that some news platforms are peddling unverified information that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party,” the statement read.
The media office described the rumors as “a total fallacy that holds no merit in logic.” It reaffirmed Atiku’s commitment to the PDP and his role in building a united opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Push for Opposition Unity
Atiku has been vocal about forming a strong coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. He believes Nigeria needs a united opposition to remove what he calls an “incompetent and pain-inflicting” government.
“Atiku is advocating a robust coalition that would accommodate all opposition parties – the PDP inclusive,” the statement added.
His team dismissed allegations that he is leaving the PDP, stating that such claims contradict his ongoing efforts to unite opposition forces. “The notion that Atiku is abandoning the PDP is completely false and misleading,” they said.
The statement emphasized that Atiku remains a key leader in the PDP and urged Nigerians to ignore any claims suggesting otherwise.
“We, therefore, wish to state unequivocally that Atiku remains a principal bonafide member of the PDP, the main opposition party,” the statement said. “Any insinuation to the contrary is designed to confuse Nigerians about the scale of the grand coalition in the works.”
As preparations for the 2027 elections gain momentum, Atiku is expected to play a central role in shaping the opposition’s strategy. Political analysts believe that his coalition push could influence the next general elections significantly.
