Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesman and prominent figure in Nigerian politics, has passed away at the age of 72 after battling illness. Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with leaders and political figures honoring his contributions to Nigeria’s development.

President Bola Tinubu led the tributes, describing Okupe as “a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.” Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said, “Okupe was a bold and articulate advocate for national development. His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him.”

Tributes from Political Leaders

Okupe, who hailed from Iperu-Remo in Ogun State, was remembered for his enduring impact on his home state and the nation. Tinubu extended condolences to the people of Ogun State, particularly the Iperu-Remo community, calling Okupe “an esteemed son and leader.”

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, also expressed sorrow over Okupe’s death. Obi described him as “an active figure in the nation’s political space and a man who desired a better Nigeria.” In a post on his X handle, Obi wrote, “His death is a profound loss—not only to his family and loved ones but to all of us.

The Labour Party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, shared similar sentiments, calling Okupe’s death “sudden.” Abure said, “He loved the nation and believed that a new Nigeria was possible. His short but impactful association with the Labour Party revealed his inspirational and charismatic self.

A Legacy of Leadership

Okupe served as the Director-General of the Labour Party’s presidential campaign in 2023 before stepping down. Despite resigning from the party last year, he maintained close ties and continued to offer advice. Abure added, “He was lively, energetic, honest, and creative—virtues we will deeply miss.”

Reflecting on Okupe’s legacy, Abure said, “Nigeria has lost an astute politician whose desire for a great nation was unquestionable. Though he still had much to offer, death has forced him to write the last chapter of his life.

As Nigeria mourns his passing, Okupe’s contributions to the nation’s political landscape remain a testament to his dedication and vision for a better Nigeria.
