The Anambra State government has vowed to take decisive action against fraudulent religious leaders involved in selling so-called healing waters, oils, and other deceptive practices.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, announced that the government will target fake pastors and prophets engaging in staged miracles and other dubious activities. These practices, he said, exploit public sentiments and promote crime or get-rich-quick schemes.
Dr. Mefor said the government is opposed to the sale of healing and anointing water and oil.
He said the governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has mandated the sanitization of the state, declaring, “We are committed to ridding the state of these individuals who have constituted themselves into nuisances, but also as enablers of crime—drug dealers, cultists, kidnappers, and robbers.”
However, despite the nobility of the government’s intentions, concerns about potential encroachment on civil liberties and freedom of worship continue to stir debate among legal and political experts.
