President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed former President Olusegun Obasanjo, calling him an “extraordinary leader and statesman” as he marks his 88th birthday.

Obasanjo is Nigeria’s longest-serving leader, having been a military Head of State (1976-1979) and democratically elected president (1999-2007)

In a statement personally signed on Wednesday, Tinubu recognized Obasanjo’s significant role in Nigeria’s history. He described him as a leader who has shaped public policies and acted as a check on leadership through his regular interventions in national discourse.

A Life Deeply Woven into Nigeria’s History

“Today, as former President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo turns 88, I pay a special tribute to an extraordinary leader and statesman,” Tinubu stated. “His contributions to Nigeria’s development are enormous, and his life for the past six decades is deeply woven into the fabric of Nigeria’s history.”

Obasanjo’s political journey has been marked by key moments in the country’s development. He played a major role in ending Nigeria’s civil war, taking the instrument of surrender from Biafran commander Col. Philip Effiong in 1970. Later, in 1976, he became head of state after the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed. He handed power to a civilian government in 1979, becoming the first military leader in Nigeria to do so.

Obasanjo returned as a civilian president in 1999, after being freed from prison a year earlier. He led the country for eight years, implementing reforms in governance, the economy, and international relations.

As head of state, he consistently demonstrated a selfless commitment to national unity, peace, and progress,” Tinubu said.

Even in retirement, Obasanjo remains influential both in Nigeria and abroad. He has been active in peace negotiations across Africa and has served as a mediator in political crises. Tinubu acknowledged this, saying, “His tireless efforts in conflict resolution, advocacy for good governance, and dedication to Pan-Africanism through institutions like the African Union and the United Nations are testaments to his statesmanship.”

Controversy and Conclusion

Tinubu also acknowledged Obasanjo’s sometimes controversial role in Nigerian politics. “Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and acted as a check on leadership,” he said.

The President concluded his message by praying for Obasanjo’s continued good health. “At 88, the former president is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him more years so that Nigeria and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge.

On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt congratulations to this great patriot. Happy 88th Birthday, President Obasanjo!
