Cyclone Alfred Nears Brisbane, Triggers Mass Evacuations

Australia’s east coast is bracing for impact as Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves toward Brisbane, Australia. Authorities have warned of destructive winds, heavy rain, and dangerous flooding.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to evacuate immediately. Queensland and New South Wales are on high alert, with storm warnings issued across a 500-kilometer stretch.

Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall early Friday as a category-two storm, packing winds of 155 km/h (96 mph). Forecasters predict up to 800 mm (31.5 inches) of rain, which could cause catastrophic flash floods.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli stressed the seriousness of the situation, urging people to follow evacuation orders. “This region hasn’t seen a cyclone in decades. Residents must prepare for the worst,” he said.

Schools Close, Residents Flee as Cyclone Nears

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has deployed heavy-lift helicopters and pledged federal support. Supplies such as sandbags, food, and water are running low as people stock up. Evacuation centers are filling fast.

Authorities have closed schools and shut down public transport across southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales. In New South Wales alone, 122 schools have been ordered to close, with vulnerable residents advised to relocate for safety.

Brisbane has not faced a direct cyclone hit in 50 years, making Cyclone Alfred a rare and dangerous event. The last major cyclone to threaten the city was in 1990, but it changed course before landfall.

Authorities expect at least 48 hours of extreme weather, urging residents to stay alert and follow emergency updates.
