Nigel Farage, the UK Reform Party boss and a strong ally of President Donald Trump, has broken ranks with the US leader. Farage rejected Trump’s characterization of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator“.
Trump branded Zelensky a dictator and a “clown” and falsely claimed he has terrible poll ratings, earning him praise from the Kremlin.
Farage appeared on a US television network today, stating he didn’t see Zelensky as a dictator.
While admitting Trump’s attack on Zelensky’s democratic mandate was wrong, Farage echoed Trump’s claim that Ukraine should hold a presidential election, even during its conflict with Russia.
“But it’s only right and proper that Ukrainians have a timeline for elections,” Farage said.
He pointed to the UK general election in 1945, held before VJ Day, as a justification. However, it did not take place until two months after VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe.
Farage was the last leader of a major Westminster party to weigh in on Trump’s comment about Zelensky. Kemi Badenoch of the Conservatives and Prime Minister Keir Starmer have all defended Zelensky from the Trump characterization.
The Reform UK leader and MP for Clacton in Essex is in Washington DC for the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which features right-wing guests supporting the president.
This comes at a time when the US is at odds with its European allies as Trump cosy’s up to Vladimir Putin of Russia ahead of a possible peace deal on Ukraine.
