A well-known gang leader, Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne, was shot and killed inside a Sri Lankan courthouse by an assailant posing as a lawyer.
Authorities reported that the shooter used a revolver concealed within a hollowed-out book, allegedly brought in by a female accomplice. The accomplice is still on the run.
Samararathne, widely known as Ganemulle Sanjeewa, was in court on several murder charges when the shooting occurred. Police escorted him to the courthouse on Wednesday with twelve officers.
The shooting in Colombo is part of an ongoing wave of killings among rival gangs. Officials have pledged to combat gang-related violence in the country.
Assailant and His Accomplices
The assailant managed to escape the scene but was later captured by law enforcement. Police and local news have reported different identities for the shooter, apparently because he has used multiple aliases.
Authorities have identified the female accomplice as 25-year-old Pinpura Dewage Ishara Sewwandi. Police offered a reward for any information leading to her arrest.
Additionally, law enforcement has arrested another police officer and a van driver suspected of aiding the two individuals involved in the shooting.
Samararathne had been in custody since his arrest in September 2023. After being shot, he was quickly taken to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
Tightened Security
This incident has prompted inquiries regarding courthouse security in Sri Lanka. Government officials are currently evaluating and implementing new security protocols.
New security measures include the deployment of armed guards for transporting specific high-profile individuals to court. The authorities vowed to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of those involved in court proceedings.
