The Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi revealed that the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, undergoing rehabilitation and expansion into six lanes, is targeted for completion by April.
The minister disclosed this during an inspection tour of the highway project on Thursday.
Umahi said the 46km stretch of highway, the first section of the ECOWAS Road to Seme Border and Abidjan, will be ready for inauguration by President Bola Tinubu in May. This will commemorate the President’s second year in office.
The minister also disclosed that the contractor handling the project has been paid ₦50 billion out of the ₦71 billion total contract sum. “The contractor has demonstrated a high capacity to deliver the project by the set timeline,” he said.
He added “The contractor has been paid about ₦50 billion; it means that what is left to complete the job is ₦21 billion. We have scheduled a meeting with the contractor to discuss how to finalize the remaining four to five kilometres before April 20.“
The second section of the road, terminating at Seme Border, will feature concrete pavement, the minister said. He also proposed that Border States (countries) complete their sections of the ECOWAS highway project, which terminates at Abidjan.
He thanked the president for his efforts in working on about 270 inherited projects across the country, many of which are earmarked for inauguration in May as well
The project’s completion will significantly improve transportation and economic activities in the region, and further strengthen West Africa’s sub-regional integration.
