Labour Party Denies Zoning 2027 Presidential Ticket to South-East

The Labour Party (LP) has clarified that it has not zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to any geopolitical zone and the comments of its National Chairman Julius Abure were taken out of context.

The party was reacting to comments credited to Mr Abure in which as part of reconciling warring factions of his party, he suggested that the next presidential ticket was open to Mr Peter Obi from the South-East zone.

Obi’s entrance into the party in 2022 took it to the third position in the 2023 general election from almost an obscure, fringe party.

In a statement on Tuesday, Party spokesman Obior Ifoh clarified that “Labour Party is a national party with large followership across the country,” the statement reads. “Therefore, the issue of zoning does not arise.

Ifoh said that Abure only advised South-East members to forge stronger alliances with other regions to boost their chances in 2027. He compared this strategy to the Yoruba political bloc’s successes through strategic realignments.

In the 2023 general elections, the party won seats in the north and across southern states,” Ifoh said. “We are working hard to surpass that achievement in future elections.

Candidates for every position must emerge through highly competitive and democratic processes, as the party’s constitution does not permit zoning. “We regret the misinterpretation of the party’s noble intention by a section of the media. Our party was quoted out of context,” Ifoh’s statement read.

The Labour Party spokesman said the party remains committed to a democratic process where candidates are selected through fair competition. He called for unity and strategic alliances to achieve the party’s political goals.
