UNIZIK Authorities Vow Thorough Investigation into Lecturer-Student Altercation

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has ordered a full-scale investigation into an incident between a lecturer and a student that gained widespread attention on social media.  The university confirmed the individuals involved. 

They are Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, and Goddy Mbakwe Precious, a third-year student in the Department of History and International Studies.

An altercation, caught on camera, showed Precious filming a TikTok video when Dr. Okoye tapped her shoulder to ask for passage. The student reacted with surprise and later confronted the lecturer physically. Dr Okoye appeared calm as the situation escalated.

The university administration, through the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, issued a press release on Wednesday assuring that the matter is being treated with “utmost seriousness.”

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph I. Ikechebelu, has directed a thorough, transparent, and unbiased investigation with the goal is to reaching the unblemished facts of the case.

UNIZIK Upholds High Ethical Standards

The university’s statement emphasized its core values of discipline, self-reliance, and excellence. It stressed its commitment to fairness, equity, and justice. 

“The incident, which has gained significant attention on social media, is being taken very seriously by the university authorities,” the statement read.

UNIZIK reaffirmed its commitment to high moral and ethical standards, saying, “Nnamdi Azikiwe University remains an institution of learning that upholds high moral and ethical standards. There is no place for indiscipline, misconduct, or any form of unacceptable behaviour within our community.”  

The university urged all parties and the public to remain calm, assuring that “appropriate actions and sanctions” will follow the investigation’s outcome. 

We urge all concerned parties and members of the public to remain calm as we diligently pursue the truth,” the statement continued. “The university is committed to upholding discipline and decorum, and we will ensure that appropriate actions and sanctions are taken based on the outcome of the investigation.”  

The university promised to provide further updates as needed.
