NLC Order Boycott of Telecom Services, Pronounce Nationwide Strike Over Tariff Hike

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has directed workers and citizens to boycott major telecommunications companies – MTN, Airtel, and Glo.

The boycott is set to begin at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 13, 2025.

The workers are protesting recent tariff increases by the telcos.

Joe Ajaero, NLC President, and Emmanuel Ugboaja, NLC Secretary, announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday.

The union demands the “immediate reversal of the tariff hike, which took effect today,” insisting the companies “revert to the previous tariff” pending the outcome of the committee’s deliberations.

The NLC also criticized the government for failing to protect citizens from what it called “corporate exploitation.

It Congress threatened further action if the tariff hike is not reversed by February 29, 2025.

The further action might include a nationwide strick beginning March 1, 2025.

The Congress called on civil society groups and all Nigerians to join the protest, urging for unity to confront “exploitative economic policies.”

The union however did not recommend alternatives for telecom users during the period of the boycott.
