A University of Ilorin, UNILORIN student [name withheld] in Kwara State has reportedly died by suicide due to economic hardship.
The deceased, a 200-level male student from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), was reportedly on a cumulative aggregate of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication.
The incident happened at his private residence in the Oke-Odo axis of Tanke community, Ilorin. University sources said financial challenges led him to take his life.
The student lost his father a few years ago, and his mother, a retired school teacher, had been supporting his education.
His financial crisis began last year when he resumed school. Colleagues raised funds to pay his tuition fees and buy food, but it wasn’t enough. He reportedly consumed a poisonous substance last weekend after his roommate left for lectures. He left a note explaining his financial struggles and inability to cope.
Upon returning, his roommate raised the alarm. A senior administrative officer confirmed the incident to journalists, describing it as shocking. The university community is now in mourning.
This tragedy highlights the severe economic difficulties many students face. It also underscores the need for better support systems for students in financial distress.
