Trump Signs Executive Order to Defund UNRWA and Withdraw from UN Human Rights Council

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The order also instructs a review of American involvement in UNESCO

Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the UN, saying, “I’ve always felt that the UN has tremendous potential, but it’s not living up to that potential.

The US was UNRWA’s largest donor, providing approximately $500 million annually. However, funding was paused in January 2024 after Israel accused UNRWA staff of participating in a Hamas attack. Congress later suspended contributions until at least March 2025.

Trump’s decision coincides with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s visit to Washington this week.

The Trump decision is seen as a significant shift in US policy, with implications for international relations and global governance.

Since taking office on January 20, the American president has signed orders withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris climate agreement.

International diplomats worry that Trump’s fixation on America’s domestic affairs could unsettle the world order, and global peace and security, let alone properity.
