Suspected bandits attacked the Ngalda cattle and central market in the Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State, killing seven persons and wounding eleven.
The attack happened around 6 p.m. during the weekly market on Tuesday.
The assailants entered the area, firing their weapons randomly and robbing shops and the cattle market.
Dauda Yakubu Damazai, a social media aide to the Fika LG Chairman, confirmed the sad event, confirming, “Seven local traders lost their lives in the attack.“
Damazai continued, “Yesterday evening (Monday), the Ngalda cattle and main market were attacked by unknown gunmen. The attackers killed seven innocent people,” and “at least eleven people sustained injuries” and were treated at the General Hospital in Fika.
Fortunately, “three of the bandits were killed by the security agencies and vigilantes,” he added.
Fika LG Chairman, Hon Audu Bukar Gadaka, visited the victims and expressed his condolences. He prayed for the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
Police Offer Details
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed that a group of six armed robbers carried out the attack. He identified the leader as Datti Alhaji Dadji from Ngalda town.
“The incident resulted in seven fatalities and eleven injuries. The robbers made away with approximately N16.5 million,” Abdulkarim stated.
In response, residents of Ngalda town organized and killed three of the robbers, while three others managed to escape but were injured.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led a team to Alhaji Dadji’s house, where they recovered a homemade pistol with three cartridges. Alhaji Dadji was arrested and is currently in police custody for further questioning.
The victims’ bodies were taken to General Hospital Fika for care and autopsy. The Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, has ordered an immediate investigation and called for calm in the community.
