Crisis in Labour Party Continue as Caretaker Committee Head to the Supreme Court

The Senator Nnenadi Usman-led 29-man Labour Party caretaker committee says it is going to the Supreme Court over the dispute about the party’s authentic leadership.

This decision follows the Court of Appeal’s validation of the party’s March 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, effectively affirming the embattled Mr Julius Abure as the authentic LP National Chairman.

The interim committee set up by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi said it is dissatisfied with the appellate verdict, which they say has raised issues that require Supreme Court clarification.

The Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party is going to seek further clarification from the Supreme Court on the leadership dispute in the party,” said Senator Nenadi Usman, Chairman of the Committee. “The November 13, 2024, and January 17, 2025 rulings of the Court of Appeal have brought up issues that only the Supreme Court can clarify, and the Caretaker Committee has instructed their lawyer accordingly.

The committee asked its supporters across the country to remain patient, as the matter would be effectively canvassed at the Supreme Court.

The leadership dispute began after the National Executive Committee resolved to remove Abure as National Chairman, leading to the formation of the caretaker committee. The party’s stakeholders did not agree with the convention organized by the Abure-led National Working Committee, which re-elected Abure to another term in office.

The Labour Party, which came an impressive third position in the 2023 general election, has since been haemorrhaging its goodwill from party infighting. Several of its lawmakers have defected to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), citing the leadership squabbles in the party as reason.
