In continuation of broad political consultation with eminent political leaders, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, yesterday paid a visit to the social critic and political activist, Dele Farotimi at his home in Lagos.
Mr. Farotimi has returned from a three-week detention in prison, accused of defamation by renowned senior lawyer, Afe Babalola. Farotimi had written a bestseller, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,” which graphically details instances of corruption and compromise by the Nigerian courts even at the highest levels.
The police arrested Farotimi on December 3, and arraigned him in both a Federal and Chief Magistrate court in Ekiti. He was granted bail just before Christmas of 2024.
Obi visited shortly after his courtesy visits to former Presidents Ibrahim Babangida, Goodluck Jonathan, and Olusegun Obasanjo.
“I made time to visit my dear younger brother, Dele Farotimi,” Obi said. “Since his return from the correctional center in Ekiti, I have not had the opportunity to meet with him. I was pleased to find him in good spirits and deeply encouraged by his unwavering dedication to the struggle for a better Nigeria.”
He said that Dele Farotimi, often fondly called The Prophet by his supporters, “exemplifies courage in the face of adversity, consistently taking bold stands for good governance in our nation. I wish him a fruitful and productive year as we continue to work together toward the development of our country.”
Obi reportedly was one of those who stood surety for Farotimi in his bail conditions.
He is due back in court on January 29.
Defiant Farotimi insists he did not lie against anybody and he was glad to have his day in court.
