Commercial luxury bus owners in Nigeria are offering a 50% fare discount on long-distance routes during the Christmas season.
This announcement came after a partnership agreement between the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON) and the Federal Government.
ALBON has directed intending travellers to go to designated motor parks and major terminals to take advantage of the discount.
The reduction applies from December 24, 2024, to January 5, 2025.
Discounted routes include Abuja to Damaturu, Kano, Maiduguri, Makurdi, and Sokoto. Southern routes receiving the discount are from Abuja to Aba, Benin, Enugu, Owerri, Port Harcourt, and Umuahia.
From Lagos, passengers heading to Aba, Abuja, Asaba, Calabar, Enugu, Umuahia, Uyo, Warri, and Yenagoa can also benefit. The fare rebate applies to northern destinations like Gombe, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Lokoja, Maiduguri, Makurdi, Sokoto, Gusau, Jalingo, and Minna.
In a statement on Tuesday, ALBON wrote, “We urge intending passengers to take advantage of Mr. President’s magnanimity and travel nationwide at half fare.”
They also mentioned that member transporters are prepared for this initiative.
ALBON clarified that the offer will run on a “first come, first served” basis.
It thanked President Tinubu and Minister of Transportation Senator Said Ahmed Alkali for their support in making this discount a reality.
In recent times, the use of commercial luxury buses appear to have declined, in favour of minibuses. The gesture could help re-ignite interest in the services of big luxury buses.
