Free Train Rides for Nigerians Begins Today

Presidential directive for free train transportation throughout the federation commences today, Friday, December 20.

The gesture, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is to assist the travelling masses joining friends and family over Christmas and New Year holidays.

The free services end on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced this information to State House correspondents in Abuja.

As we did last year, there will be free train service to all Nigerians from December 20 up until January 5, free train service nationwide. This is consistent with the President’s desire to cushion the effect of transportation, especially to the most vulnerable Nigerians,” the minister explained.

Similarly, the same gesture was recently extended during the Eid-el-Fitr Sallah holiday, observed between Tuesday, April 9, and Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

Train Routes Available

Currently, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) offers several train service routes across the country. Here are some of the main routes:

Lagos-Ibadan: This route connects Lagos to Ibadan and is one of the busiest lines.

Lagos-Abeokuta: This route links Lagos to Abeokuta.

Abeokuta-Ibadan: This route connects Abeokuta to Ibadan.

Warri-Itakpe: This route runs from Warri to Itakpe and has been operational since 2020.

Abuja-Kaduna: This route connects Abuja to Kaduna, although it is currently suspended for security reasons.

Iddo-Ijoko: This route links Iddo in Lagos to Ijoko in Ogun State.

Port Harcourt-Aba: This route is the only serviceable route on the Eastern railway flank.

Additionally, there are plans for new routes and expansions, including the Lagos-Calabar Rail Line.
