Spanish Real Madrid Overwhelm Pachuca to Lift The Inaugural FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2024

Real Madrid has won the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup in a thrilling showdown against Pachuca of Mexico at the Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar. On Wednesday, it trounced Pachuca 3-0 to lift the maiden cup.

The match, which was the tournament’s inaugural edition, saw Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior named Player of the Match, minutes after he won the FIFA Best Footballer of the Year award, with Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti named Coach of the Year.

In fact, Real Madrid proved its mettle by winning the finals after being named the Best Team of the Year as well.

How the Match Unfolded

The match began with both teams determined to win, but Real Madrid took control early. In the 37th minute, Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring with a composed finish after a flowing team move involving Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior.

Pachuca threatened with early strikes by Oussama Idrissi and Luis Rodriguez, but Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois was equal to the task. In the second half, Rodrygo doubled Real Madrid’s lead with a curling ball in the 52nd minute.

Pachuca continued to push forward nonetheless hoping to level up, but Real Madrid’s defence held firm. In the 84th minute, Vinicius Junior sealed the victory with a penalty after Lucas Vazquez was fouled inside the box.

Initially referee ruled play on, but VAR called him to order.

After the match, Madrid lifted the cup, sparking wild thrills and celebration among their fans worldwide, but disbelief and sadness in Mexico.

Post-Match Analysis

Truthfully, Madrid’s victory in the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup wasn’t at all far-fetched. They were tactically superior, and the result didn’t surprise many, but the daring Pachuca and their Mexican fans.

Throughout the match, Madrid had much of the control, maintaining possession and dictating the pace of the game. Their ability to capitalize on key moments with clinical finishing undid Pachuca.

Kylian Mbappe, returning from injury, played a pivotal role, not only scoring the opening goal but also creating other exciting moments. Rodrygo’s individual efforts were on full display as he weaved through defenders to score the second goal.

Defensively, Real Madrid was solid, with Thibaut Courtois making crucial saves when Pachuca made its few real attempts. The backline, led by Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao, remained organized and resilient, effectively thwarting Pachuca’s counter-attacks.

Howbeit, Pachuca managed to break down Real Madrid’s defence a few times. They had moments of promise, especially in the early stages, but could not convert their chances. Their goalkeeper, Carlos Moreno, made several important saves too to keep the scoreline respectable, but the relentless pressure from Real Madrid proved too much to handle.

Vinicius Junior was named the Player of the Match and infact FIFA Best Footballer of the Year for his overall performance, including his assistance with Mbappe’s goal and his decisive penalty. His dynamic play and ability to create chances helped Real Madrid to victory.
