Ghana’s President-Elect, John Mahama, is in Nigeria and met President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Tuesday. It is his first foreign visit since winning the December 7 elections.
The meeting occurred at the president’s official residence at the State House in Aso Villa. It comes just days after President Tinubu called Mahama to congratulate him.
Tinubu’s aide, Dada Olusegun, announced the meeting; however did not disclose details of the discussions except to say that Tinubu praised Ghanaians for their dedication to democracy, calling Ghana “a model for political stability and transparent governance in Africa.”
He hopes that Mahama’s second term will bring stability to West Africa.
John Mahama was President of Ghana from July 24, 2012, to January 7, 2017. He became President after winning the December 2012 election. He lost to incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017 but is returning to the office after an eight-year hiatus.
He will be inaugurated as President of Ghana on January 7, 2025.
Mahama’s visit could be to extend a personal invitation to Tinubu to attend his inauguration, underscoring the strategic, economic and geopolitical relationship between the two countries.
