POEM: “Dear Me”

I owe you an apology for so many things.
I owe you an apology for so few wins.

Myself, I owe you for all the times I didn’t live up.
I gave up, sowing bad words into you,
When I should’ve just shut up.

I’m sorry for all the times I let you down.
In the end, other than God,
Who’s there for us when we’re down?

I owe myself for all the times I let people walk over me.
Even a doormat would hate to be me.

Second-guessing, the fears, the lies,
The threats—oh, how time flies.
The guilt, anger, hate,
Wasted emotions from those times.

Dear me,
I’m sorry for giving up before the battle began.
When life cooked,
I complained about the ugly parts of the pan.

Now, I promise to live like the sun—
Shining each day, no matter what’s been done.

I forgive you, I love you,
I appreciate you, God bless you.
Words aren’t enough,
But today we move, because in the end,
The person I see in that mirror is you.

And I’m prod of you.
