The Lagos State government is taking steps to safeguard public welfare by signing the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Bill into law. The new legislation prohibits illegal organ harvesting in Lagos State henceforth.
Mr. Lawal Pedro, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, announced this on Thursday at the Ministry of Justice in Alausa, Ikeja.
Pedro explained the Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplantation Law “combats illicit organ trade and ensures ethical medical practices.”
It prohibits organ harvesting without proper authorization and bans ads for selling human organs.
“Violators face up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to ₦10 million,” the AG said.
Other Piece of Legislations
In addition to the organ transplantation law, the governor approved four other important laws.
These include the Consumer Protection Law, the Lagos Enforcement Training Institute Law, the Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Laws, and the Fire and Rescue Service Law.
Regarding the new Consumer Protection Agency Law, it is a major advancement for consumer rights in Lagos. “As Lagos thrives as a hub of commerce and trade, we must safeguard the rights of our citizens,” Pedro said.
The law empowers consumers to hold businesses accountable. It also imposes strict penalties for violations, including a fine of up to ₦5 million and the possible closure of premises where dangerous products are sold.
Pedro said these laws “aren’t just milestones in our legislative journey; they show our commitment to making Lagos a beacon of progress, justice, and opportunity in Nigeria.”
The attorney-general said the government is focused on addressing the immediate needs of its citizens. “We aim to protect their rights and ensure their safety, health, and prosperity,” he added.
He said the governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, signed the legislations “to show our commitment to the welfare, security, and prosperity of every Lagosian.”
Pedro asked all residents to learn the new laws and engage in their enforcement, remarking, “Together, we can build a more just and secure Lagos.”
